Interview with Sun K

The Deli Toronto’s reader choice winner of 2014, have a few stories to tell. We pressed Sun K with some hard questions! We wanted to know all their dirty little secrets...like, how did you guys meet and who is Sweet Marie? Excited to announce their first full-length album, Northern Lies, which will debut this March, we only wish it was sooner. Sun K, puts forth an eclectic folk-rock style that is warm, crisp and inviting; every track on Northern Lies tells it’s own tale with ease and grace. Our ears can’t get enough of Teaser Part II, it lifts us up and drops us hard with a rockin' chorus that leaves you chanting. Now that we know everything about Sweet Marie, she is so much sexier to sing along to. Let it Grow has us feeling the sun on our face on a rainy day. So, hold on tight and see them live 2/20 @ Lee’s Palace. It will be a tremendous event!

Christian Punk Band @ the Blackshire

Christian Punk Band is no stranger to the Deli Toronto, we watched them climb the year-end poll, catching our attention. If you are cumbersome to check these guys out because you think they are a “Christian" rock band, it’s not the case at all. Christian Turner (former member of Teenage Kicks) formed Christian Punk Band with Jeff Takahashi and Jon Lubanski, the trio released self-titled EP late November. Claiming “Fuzz-Pop” genre, Christian Punk Band has a special wit about them delivering catchy, fuzzy-pop punked out tunes. Keeping the tracks short and sweet, the album rips through you ears leaving each track etched in your head. “Bang-Bang”, bangs with sweet vocals that bounce in and out of a wailing guitar riffs and cracking bubbly drum beats. Listen to their EP below! Don’t miss them @ the Blackshire 2/7, it’s going to be a Christian Punk Band kinda time!

Mumbai Standstill
"Troubles
"
mp3

Mumbai Standstill’s recent release Troubles is a sweet and salty mixture of sounds created by seven eclectic and talented musicians. The large combination of instruments gives this album diversity and has you wondering what could be next, after each song.Troubles also includes a wide variety of genres; including, blues rock, soul, folk-pop, ska, some reggae rhythms and an overall southern folk-rock feel. Mumbai Standstill is a suave and sophisticated listening experience that will appeal to many. Some of our favorites from the album include: Amused: a sultry tune that starts out with smooth sexy trumpet sounds and mostly boasts a laid back groove. The song is simple and soothing. Having a bad day? This one just may cheer you up, with its fusion of multiple percussive instruments, trumpet tones and lulling vocal harmonies. It’s got an almost-island feel to it that comes in and out from start to finish. Doctor: Another worthy mention that digs its claws into you with that ever-so-tasty keys progression, that ebbs and flows over major and minor chords. Introduce that softly picked guitar and that sweet vocal- and they’ve cooked something up that makes everyone swoon. They hit a home run as soon as the song picks up and introduces the gritty vocal you are craving for the pre-chorus. This song is the one that keeps it most vocally interesting between the switch up from smooth to gritty, switching in and out as necessary it becomes more about the emotion of the song as an entirety, than about the guitar chords or drum beat or even lyrics combined. Next up, we’ve picked Troubles: opening up with a playful guitar, piano and banjo combo...you’ll be singing this one later. Again, the vocals in this song are on-point, perfectly gritty, with a subtly beautiful undertone to it. The chorus is indicative of a southern blues chant anthem, follows a simplistic melodic line that even the most vocally challenged can sing along to. This one is reminiscent of spending summer nights with some of your best buds, singing along, laughing and having drinks around a fire – good vibes all around. Troubles as a whole plays around with a great array of musical styles all mashed up in alluring combinations, flowing easily from one song to the next. A seamless album, perfect for cruising down country roads in the summer time.- Courtney Chalapenko

catl @ the Horseshoe

CATL is a badass duo that  brings you back to the days of dirty blues! They shake you up with fat guitar grooves, hard, bare drumming and killer gritty vocals. Their most recent album “This Shakin’ House” is littered with bebop from driving dance tunes, to harmony soaked blues-folk inspired tracks, it packs all the punch and vivacity you’d expect from a rock band and then some. Their Live shows seem to be no exception to that unmistakable zest,  ‘cause rumour has it they literally leave their blood and sweat on stage. They headline Jan 31 @ The Horseshoe Tavern, go find out if the rumours are true! -Courtney Chalapenko
