CLAVVS plays SXSW + celebrates EP release at the Knit on 03.29

The Brooklyn dream-pop duo known as CLAVVS has always had their feet squarely planted in the realm of electronic soul-pop. Swaying soundscapes and luscious vocals were synthesized into a potent formula. Yet with this recent run of new singles to promote their upcoming EP No Saviors, the pair have cracked open new patterns to make their distinct ideas sound infinitely more versatile. Lay Back adds a baroque flourish (reminiscent of some Tricky's best ideas) that crashes down like a waterfall of strings, while the title track (streaming below) bursts with polyrhythms and self-assured brashness. Retaining their hazy aura and breaking out of the dream pop bubble with exuberance is a balancing act that CLAVVS pulls off with the utmost ease. - Tucker Pennington

Pale Ramon, Phase One and Yuli play Revolution Vol. #36 on 02.23

The monthly appointment with The Revolution, the series organized by National Sawdust and featuring emerging local talent, is back this coming Saturday (February 23) with Volume #36

Three artists coming from varied musical backgrounds will grace the venue's stage: Pale Ramon is a brand new duo featuring Emanuel Ayvas of Emanuel and the Fear and Kevin Plessner of Oceanographer / Monuments, artists we covered extensively in this very blog. Their music walks the line between the intense songwriting of Jeff Buckley and the edgy arrangements of post-rock luminaires Tortoise.

Blending Hip Hop with melodic elements, a variety vocal samples and even jazzy bass lines, the latest single by rapper Phase One (entitled Citii Boy) shows a musician interested in taking the genre in new places, with results that sounds effortless and well produced.

Yuli might only have one track available online (Her, streaming below), but it's a song that may cast a spell on you. Soulful and experimental, this single strikes a perfect balance between intensity, melody and sonic exploration, taking us back to the day trip-hop ruled the world.

Listen to these three artists in the files streaming (the YouTube video has two tracks) and don't miss their live performance at Revolution #36 - tickets are here.

Adia Victoria's new LP "Silences" drops 02.22 at onset of national tour

We hinted at the release of Adia Victoria's upcoming second album Silences last December, when Victoria played Delta Blues Christmas at Third Man. Now it's February, the last of the holiday decorations have come down, and Victoria's about to head out on tour to support the new record, which drops on the 22nd. The polymath artist -- who on Silences sings songs that range from soaring ballads to dance-inducing blues rock numbers -- co-produced the album with The National's own Aaron Dessner. You can therefore hear plenty of emotion come through in the layers of masterful production on Silences; however, the base melodies and lyrics coming from Victoria's voice are enough to convince you of her talent. Watch the video for "Different Kind of Love" below and see for yourself the power and conviction that Victoria delivers. - Will Sisskind
