highandfragile brings shoegaze to Rickshaw Stop (3/8)

In her own words, Oakland shoegaze solo act highandfragile is “a project founded out of desperation for emotional relief by Breannyn DeLongis.” A refreshing departure from the conventions of the genre (typically dominated by men), highandfragile’s debut EP i was not well operates within the space where angst and actualization coalesce, exploring the modern pitfalls of being a young adult—it’s angry, artful, and honest all at once. The chorus of opening track “happy birthday” (streaming below) is almost anthemic (as much as is possible for shoegaze.) In this project, DeLongis has established herself as an artist and is definitely one to watch in the future. She will be joining There’s Talk at their record release show at Rickshaw Stop on March 8th. - Lilly Milman

Vypers - EP Release Party @ The Baby G 03.09

Brand new single from garage/psych band Vypers. “Deepsave” begins at a slithering pace with heavy drums and exotic noises filling the air. The energy is a more subdued than other recent releases from these guys. The change of pace is nice though as it makes you wonder what might be around the corner. This tune is still proves to be complete chaos like you would expect from Vypers. They are having an EP Release Party on March 9th at The Baby G with a stacked undercard featuring Brenda and Jean Daddy. – Kris Gies

Assassin of Youth reconstruct shoegaze on newest EP

The small indie tape label New Perfume Records out of Boston have a knack for finding compelling underground artists with little to no online presence (David Poole and Afraid of Storms to name a couple). The newest release from Saguiv Rosenstock, the shoegaze weirdo behind Assassin of Youth, is the most recent example of New Perfume gold. A MYSTERIOUS HUM… WHERE IS IT FROM? is the newest release by Assassin of Youth, a four track EP that challenges the shoegaze status quo by incorporating elements of fast punk and cheeky humor into the typically vast and bleak atmosphere of the genre. A MYSTERIOUS HUM is a nod to contemporary noise rock melody makers like DIIV and Beach Fossils, while maintaining the innate weirdness of the Boston underground scene. Stream their new EP below and check out more from New Perfume here. -Charley Ruddell
