Industrial psych-rockers GHXST share digital album "Gloom," play SXSW on 3/13

Brooklyn electronic psych rock duo GHXST dropped their latest digital album “Gloom” at the end of 2018. After playing a select number of hand picked shows around the release date, they are now preparing to showcase the new material at this years SXSW music festival. Lead track “Hunger” immediately establishes a dark, slow-burn foreboding that places emphasis on deep-end howling guitars, many of them sampled. Dreamy female vocals come adorned with a level of unsettling doom that would surely please David Lynch and his fans. Additional tracks like “Ocean is a Desert” and “Vaquero” continue that vibe while adding eery electronic elements reminiscent of Swiss industrial guitar-rock pioneers The Young Gods. “Bad Blood II” introduces a pulsating electronic synth progression, while “Ride” digs down into a bass-tone heavy groove that A Place To Bury Strangers frequently resides. Final track “Heatwaves” incorporates bended slide-guitar along with its apprehensive vocal delivery, dark ambience and snaking progression. GHXST will be performin at an official SXSW showcase on 3/13 at BD Riley's. - Dave Cromwell

New Body Electric's Newest Single

This past Monday, New Body Electric released a single, “Cash Cache.” As indicated by the title, the song is about the relationship artists form with the money needed to support themselves and their art. It’s a fairly serious topic, one the band handles with delicate sensibility. It’s actually a cheerful song, with a pleasantly immersive melody and vocals that are just the right amount of breathy. What makes it strong is the quiet but persistent sense of melancholy underlying each note. It’s the perfect song for when you’re tired of feeling sad, and you need to ease yourself into a better mood.

On Friday, New Body Electric will be playing a release show at The Cruzroom Annex. Motorcoat will also be playing a set. You can find out more information on the event's Facebook page

Bug Seance EP

Bug Seance is releasing their first album March 1st, and for now has 3 songs available to stream on their Bandcamp. Each song speaks volumes of the work and detail the band puts into their music. Their genre-blending style combines shoegaze inspired bridges with more high energy riffs and vocals. At times they sound faintly reminiscent of No Doubt’s earliest work. The jazzy ambient notes function as a smooth, enticing outer layer. It’s an impressive first release.

Bug Seance’s next show is this Thursday, February 21st at No Fun alongside The Strid and Better Humans. You can also catch them at their release show at the Waypost, on March 1st. Spiller and Jazz Boyfriends will also be playing sets.

Dream-pop trio Isla Invisible premieres cathartic video for "Pillow"

This past October, dream-pop trio Isla Invisible introduced us to their hypnotic sound through the release of their debut EP. On Thursday, the band gave us another peak into that world with the release of the video for single “Pillow”. Shaped by incandescent, shoegazey melodies and support from atmospheric guitars reminiscent of bands like Beach House and the Cocteau Twins, the track is strikingly complimented by surreal footage from Puerto Rico, where the group first formed before relocating to NYC. Faces warp, sunlight blurs the vision, and everything feels only half-real, like a mirage of a memory remembered in the present. The video captures the melancholic feeling of reminiscing about the past - but here, the “invisible island” conjured by Isla Invisible’s music becomes more than a memory, but a place to return to, and to reconcile with. Check out “Pillow” below. - Sunny Betz
