Sparkle Carpet

Feminist folk trio Sparkle Carpet are the tough, goth ladies we’ve been waiting for. Their album, We Do Stares, has such an “I don’t give a shit” attitude that reviewing it almost feels redundant. Emphasis on almost. Their music is lively and boisterous. “Mrs. Robinson Digs Me,” a playful take on the Simon & Garfunkel original, is incredibly fun to listen to. The use of triangle adds an enjoyably childlike aspect to the songs, but in no way does it make the music childish. It makes the music sharper, bringing attention to the cheeky smirks behind each word sung. Other songs, such as “You Don’t Think” reveal the steely inner core at the heart of the band. The resolve and determination in the song’s hoarse vocals are rousing.

Sparkle Carpet's next show is Friday, April 19th at Murder Mine. Loud in the Morning, Earth of Foxes, Geophagia will also be playing sets.

New Track: "WHO WHAT WEAR" - MINT

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Kyle Gilbride (Waxahatchee, Dark Thoughts, Yowler), a new single, “WHO WHAT WEAR,” has materialized from the punk quartet of MINT. Driving bass pushes the tempo as a smooth but on-the-verge-of-frantic vocal delivery describes how the clothes you wear serves as a window into your personality (or at least, the outside world forms opinions based on what they think your clothing, and by extension, image represents). It's a high-speed streetcar that tears forward almost speeding off the rails in a mad rush, while still holding it all together. You can catch MINT at Cousin Danny’s on Monday, March 25, along with Buffalo’s Science Man.

Dark Trip - Mysterious Dark Punk Band Gets 4AM Last Call at Bovine 02.22

Lo-fi power pop band Dark Trip will be creepin’ into the Bovine later this month for a seemingly rare show. Their EP “Dark Trip Demos” was released long enough ago that it’s making me wonder if they aren’t the demos but the actual record! Jokes on us. 5 tracks of scary pop punk including a track titled Tony Danza so you know it’s good. Their upcoming gig at the Bovine Sex Club is on February 22nd with Sick Things, Hot Kid and Teen Archer. 4AM last call too! – Kris Gies

Toronto based power trio Wine Lips are getting’ set to release their latest record “Stressor” on February 27th and have just dropped their second single. “Electric Lady” is a rippin’ garage track with ear worm hooks making a deadly combo of rock n’ roll. The video features singer/guitarist Cam Hillborn gettin’ all wine lipped and stumblin’ around the city. It’s definitely a tune that’ll make you wanna drink… Wine Lips are heading out on tour of Canada and the States finishing off with their hometown Release Party at the Horseshoe Tavern on April 5th with Pale Lips, Vypers and Fade Awaays. – Kris Gies
