Post-punk group Lunch playing The Know on Sept. 24

 Echos of the UK's '80s, goth-tinged post-punk are everywhere on "Let Us Have Madness Openly," the full-length debut from Portland's Lunch. The post-punk quintet channel the likes of Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Cure into a splendidly dark record that offers ten well-crafted and impressively produced tracks. Replete with chillingly bright guitars, brooding and passionate vocals, and a generally haunting air, the album is a compelling debut, and an excellent compilation of post-punk compositions. The band doesn't shy away from their punk roots either, including short and punchy tracks such as "Bad Cut" and "Brand New Shirt" as well as driving bass lines. Lunch will be performing at The Know on September 24th, and you can check out their track "Not An Ocean" below. - Patrick Wolff

Festival Debut: Gathering of The Tribes at Public Works in San Francisco - 9/13

Editor's Note: Jonathan Cárdenas of Pow Magazine and San Francisco Great Society put a lot of time into curating this exclusive peek at the upcoming festival, Gathering of the Tribes. This fest celebrates and works to promote and preserve the spirit of psych music in San Francisco. Founder, Dennis Gonzales is very passionate about his work and his efforts to support psych musicians from all over the US. The Bay Area is lucky to have him and the community of amazing promoters and musicians who help keep the spirit and tradition of supportive, familial music and arts communities alive and well. -je

The Gathering Of The Tribes is a festival centralized exclusively in itself and its own breed of musicians and artists. San Francisco has had other festivals in past years, but this one aims to showcase the Bay Area’s breed of psychedelia and its sub-genres, as well as celebrate its musical and artistic ancestry. The name is borrowed, or you could even say revitalized—resurrected—from the Human Be-In that took place in Golden Gate Park, January 14, 1967. This is when Haight-Ashbury became symbolically immortalized as a counter-culture mecca. Our festival celebrates San Francisco’s past and present, and aims to push forward its music and arts in a positive and progressive direction, preserving it for the good of the Bay Area and to keep things groovy.

Hopefully you got that reference. But no, we’re the San Francisco Great Society. 

Founder, Dennis Gonzales: I've been running Pow Magazine since 1986 and being entrenched in the music community for several years as a social media journalist, I can tell you SF music is not only alive, it is about to explode into a new movement unlike anything seen since the first music scene in 1965. Everything about our Society and our festival is a familial, grass roots effort.  Amoeba is sponsoring the event—they too have promoted it on their Facebook page as well as Twitter. Pow Magazine, Counter Culture Artist Management, and Innerlight Presents are altogether presenting this festival. We have reached out to the best of the Bay, and most have said “yes.”

Clay Andrews of The Spiral Electric and Innerlight Presents: If the festival is comprised of bands that are all touring and far away, and everybody has all their records—that’s great and all; you have to bring people to the event, but at the same time it’s like—don’t just throw a fest where you just bring an import of things because that’s not really doing anything for the local scene. It’s not exposing people to what’s actually happening right now in their backyards.

Derek See SF DJ, musician and music collector: One thing I’m especially excited about is hearing and meeting bands that I don’t know even though they're local. Because of what i do for a living, i have to get up real early in the morning on weekends—I do go out and see live music when I can, but never as much as I’d like to, whereas at this festival I’m just super stoked to be able to experience and hang out with like-minded folks.

Soft Kill drop new album, play Star Theater on Sept. 18

"Heresy," released early last month, is the latest album from the Portland based post-punk group Soft Kill. The LP, which contains 6 tracks and runs for just under thirty minutes, is a collection of tight, polished, gothic post-punk with unmistakable influence from groups like Interpol and The Cure. The spectral vocals blanket the eerie guitars and the pulsing drums like a fog, giving the record a definite haunting appeal. The title track (streaming below) closes out the LP with 7 minutes of dark, trance-inducing music that begins with some ghostly guitar play, building into a fuller and heavier sound as the song goes on. The album is currently available on Bandcamp for a limited time, and a 12" physical release is expected sometime this fall. Soft Kill will be performing at Star Theater on September 18. Cardboard Crowns @ The Garrison

This 4 piece band from Ottawa really are the kings and The Cardboard Crowns have got the crowns to prove it. That makes their music royalty. So take a long listen to their latest record "Global Citizen". The opening track "Pulling Teeth" has some Atlantic Canadian rock vibes to it. Borderline celtic rhythm mixed with some straight ahead punk rock. They call themselves a blend of ska/reggae/punk and this comes flying out at ya in the title track of the album. These guys have got a killer fusion of genres, paired with nice groovy basslines, and a drummer who does an outstanding job of keepin it real. It's still summer, so throw the crowns on the ol' pod while you're cruising in your Jeep YJ, roof down, and enjoy. No King for Countrymen @ The Cavern

These days, it’s common to find fans of indie rock with a nostalgic appreciation for early 2000s mainstream pop punk. While some dismiss it as a sound of yesteryear, others, like Hamilton’s No King For Countrymen instead choose to embrace the sound while incorporating it in their own style. The content on their recent EP A Year In Recovery channels this influence with modern indie rock production, resulting in five powerful tracks full of charging rock tempos and retrospective lyrics. “Alright You Win” a tour de force of heavy guitars, pulsing basslines and the signature passive-aggressiveness found in pop punk lyrics. No King For Countrymen have made a science out of blending introspective content with bursts of indie rock energy, all neatly packaged together with clean production. The Countrymen will be bringing their signature sound to The Cavern in Toronto on August 20. -Chris PJ D
