Pom Pom Squad strips songs to emotional core for solo set at Mercury Lounge 1.14

Pom Pom Squad’s music is dynamic and driving, but at the heart of the band is Mia Berrin’s sincere and emotionally vulnerable songwriting. Littered with stirring lyrics like “you said you wanted to take me away / so I packed a bag but you never came,” Berrin captures heartache with honesty and accuracy. The power of distorted guitars and crashing drums can help tell the story but her voice always leads. On January 14th, you can hear that songwriting take center focus when Pom Pom Squad plays a solo set at Mercury Lounge. – Cameron Carr

Punk rock group QWAM releases debut LP "Feed Me" at The Knit on 01.24

Walking the line between punk and alt rock, Brooklyn's QWAM delivers generous doses of anthemic energy in their debut EP "Feed Me" (a title that surely resonates with most emerging musician in the city). The record was born and raised in Brooklyn, and recorded at legendary Studio G in Greenpint by Jack Counce. You can catch the band's driving guitars, frenetic drums, and snarling vocals from lead singer Felicia Lobo at The Knitting Factory on January 24th, during which they'll be celebrating the record's release.

Nervous Dater bring their indie pop punk to Bushwick Public House on 01.05

Nervous Dater gives us the best parts of early 00's pop punk (the energy and fun) minus the worst parts (the whiny vocals). Guitars get big and the lyrics tell stories of bad decisions, broken friendships, and feeling like a hot mess. Singer Rachel Lightner carries most of the band's tracks as if she's gleefully marinating in life's ugliness over the band's fun, catchy rock. They released full length "Don't Be A Stranger" in September 2017. Favorite lyrics: "It's hard to ask for help if you don't really want it / passed out on the train in your own vomit", "I still dress just like I'm sixteen / and I still get way too drunk during the week", and the shimmer of hope: "I'm so fucking lucky / you're so fucking lucky". They play Bushwick Public House on Friday, January 5th. We are looking forward to seeing what this band does in 2018 as their tour date book already has them playing Pouzza Fest in Montreal in the spring. - Meghan Rose
