RIP NYC Indie Hip Hop pillar Majesty

We learned that MC Majesty passed away this past week. Along with Dayv “Mental” Cino, Majesty helped found Legendary Cyphers, a weekly free all-ages event every summer Friday in Union Square park since August 2013. Majesty was family to many in the scene, known to be supportive, positive, and an embodiment of everything that is Hip Hop culture. The NYC Hip Hop community mourns the loss of his vibrant energy today, but his spirit still resonates in the beats and the concrete, in the hearts and elevated minds he helped cultivate. Catch him spark off this promo for the first season:

Willie Green drops new album and feathered octopus.

Not since Dabrye’s two/three has a producer collected such a monstrous and diverse group of rappers and pushed them out of their comfort zones and into the further realms of phantasmagoria. In the video for “The Feathered Octopus,” the first of hopefully a whole series from his new Doc Savage EP, Brooklyn producer wunderkind Willie Green provides a polyrhythmic backdrop for two of indie hip hop’s preeminent lyricists to wax intangibles. Like the album, the vid is rife with hip hop cameos. Watch repeatedly, you will be wrestling with more than the language. - BrokeMc

The Dude Hates Cancer Afterparty w/Lushlife at Boot & Saddle Sept. 24

10 years ago, The Dude Hates Cancer started in Philly as a Big Lebowski-themed fundraiser campaign, bowling tournament, and party that was designed to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Since then, The Dude has extended to New York, Cleveland, and California, managing to raise over half a million dollars for LLS. Dudes will abide when the 10th annual bowling tournament rolls into South Bowl today. However, as soon as the winning team is crowned and people have their fill of the free tater tot bar, people will head over to Boot & Saddle for Jackie Treehorn's After Party that features music from two local mainstays. Ever since he teamed up with CSLSX to release Ritualize, an album that many have dubbed one of the best of 2016 thus far, Lushlife has had a huge year that will hopefully find his name heavily lauded on the national/international level at its conclusion, and it's still not over for him yet with another new mind-altering instrumental EP, No Dead Language (Western Vinyl), headed our way this October 7th. Lushlife will also be joined this evening by the always energetic jazz-funk rock collective Swift TechniqueBoot & Saddle, 1131 S Broad St., 8:30pm, $10 21+ - Bill McThrill

Weekend Warrior, September 23 - 25

There’s no room for you to hide from conflict in the songcraft of Camae Ayewa, a.k.a. Moor Mother. Erring toward a jarring fantasticism that is well-grounded in reality, Moor Mother makes use of analog equipment, sampling and field recordings to churn out hauntingly oblique production, uniting voices throughout time into a common narrative of resistance. Beyond the grinding synths is a prolific artist, thinker and organizer. Ayewa’s Community Futures Lab - an initiative aimed at providing a gallery, workshop and collective memory project to marginalized communities - has been nominated by the Philly Geek Awards for Impact Organization of the Year. Local DIY art gallery Vox Populi is currently featuring some of her sound design work through the end of October, and her literature is available online in the form of zines and hardbound books.  Through various modes of production Ayewa’s projects explore identity politics, time and memory with a striking clarity, bringing to the forefront the anxieties of our historical present. Fetish Bones, Moor Mother’s debut LP on Don Giovanni Records, places her work in the company of other significant artists such as Downtown Boys and Screaming Females. Her record release party is this Saturday night in Brewerytown at the Yung Kandy Collective, and she’ll be joined on stage by fellow Philly experimental artist NAH. Yung Kandy Collective, 2809 W. Girard Ave., 7pm, $12, All Ages - Josh Kelly
