Egrets on Ergot release video for "Mangkukulam," debut album out on 10/27

"Mangkukulam!," chants art-punk quartet Egrets on Ergot over a relentless barrage of rolling toms and thudding bass lines. The term stands for someone who is a practitioner of low magic or sorcery in Filipino culture, a striking motif that presents an alien and uncompromising vision. Their loping, practically instrumental rhythms hit with a snarling energy without losing a keen sense of groove, casting a dark spell that engulfs your senses with each and every primitive shriek.

"Mangkukulam" is the lead-off track off of Egrets on Ergot's debut album Surfeit of Gemütlich, which comes out on October 27 via Cleopatra Records. Watch the official video below.

Charles Fauna opens for Cape Francis at Mercury Lounge on 09.29

Charles Fauna will open the album release show for his label mate Cape Francis tomorrow at Mercury Lounge. Fauna, the moniker of singer-songwriter Charlie Mischer, has had a busy summer co-writing singles for other artists, mixing new tracks at Electric Lady Studios, and releasing the music video for his song "Restless Child". Twisting bodies, darkened hallways, stark rooms, and a bouncing atonal beat give the song and video an eerie, adreline-fueled vibe. Watch it below, then catch Charlie at Mercury tomorrow night (September 29). - Will Sisskind

NYC Record of the Month Dan Friel (Parts & Labor) returns with Upper Wilds

The Deli is intimately familiar with the musical inclinations of electronic musician and composer Dan Friel, having featured his previous band Parts & Labor on the cover of its 11th NYC issue back in 2006. The noise rock group called it quits in 2012, after which Friel mostly focused on running his label Cardboard Records in conjunction with former P&L bassist J.Warshaw. We are thrilled to find out that Dan has a new project, and that it's as noisy as his previous one. Named Upper Wilds, the band plays what could be described as a noisy brand of drone-rock with industrial and (rather buried) pop influences. Distorted guitars, synths, drums, and vocals overlap and blend, in some kind of well orchestrated orgy of fuzz. Dan's earnest sounding vocal melodies, at times reminiscent of early R.E.M. and seminal hardcore band Hüsker Dü, emerge from this sea of distortion, somehow giving it an organized shape. Like the aforementioned bands' records, this album has a monolithic, recognizable sound, but what it loses in variety, it gains in power and impact - we can't find a weak song in it. The group will be celebrating the release of their debut album "Guitar Module 2017" at Alphaville on October 7th.

New Irreversible Entanglements EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Progressive, liberation, free jazz ensemble Irreversible Entanglements just released its self-titled EP via International Anthem/Don Giovanni Records. Combining the socially conscious, poetic prowess of Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) with the expansive fervor and fury collectively by Keir Neuringer (alto saxophone), Aquiles Navarro (trumpet), Luke Stewart (double bass), and Tcheser Holmes (drums), the group pushes against the status quo in a raw yet refined demonstration of resistance. Musically advancing on a non-linear, albeit absorbing path, while providing a detail-rich, sonic canvas, lyrically, the messages ring clear and direct. What may initially sound "out there" is in fact right here in front of you.

Bermuda Angels Premiere Self-Titled Debut 09.29

Bermuda Angels offers half entrancing, half disturbing synth-driven art-pop that is dark and seductive, bewildering in its own way. Sophie Kadow’s chilling and dizzying vocals are tempered by the warmer, more grounded lyrical style of her artistic partner, Bermuda Jones.

Fromthe band's self-titled LP comes the single “On The Run,” a love-song to toxicity and a loss of self, further cemented by the surrealistic Spaghetti Western backdrop of the single’s music video. Catch the disorienting Bermuda Angels LP on September 29th and succumb to the delirium. - Amanda Ogea
