New Track: "Plant" - Doubles

“Plant,” the first single from the quartet of Doubles, gradually blossoms before one’s ears. Vocal harmonies with the slight tick of guitar gives way to uninhibited, rockin' instrumentation. What begins as the makings of a tender tune tears off the band-aid in thoughtful rebellion/independence.

Post drone rockers 75 Dollar Bill play Troost 10/23

We are not even sure where to start with a band like 75 Dollar Bill, but after a series of jaw drops, we're comfortable settling on "brilliant." The NY-based duo of Rick Brown and Che Chen produce gorgeous, winding instrumentals that are not only melodically lush, but rhythmicaly intricate and driving. Lead by a quarter-tone guitar, the band's music draws from a distinctive North African influence, but their sound is as expansive as it is downright nuts. Stacking layers and layers of instrumentation as diverse as viola drones and bari sax licks, 75 Dollar Bill lands firmly in devilishly intriguing territory. Do yourself a favor and stream them below, or better yet, catch them live at Troost 10/23.-Olivia Sisinni

Desilu Creates Cosmic Punk Vibrations on Claw

Self-described as ‘Ewoks operating the Death Star after a long night of Ewok partying’, Desilu, is an enticing blend of sonic reverb and angst-fueled garage rock that coalesces into a cosmic punk opera. Desilu’s recently released 4th album, Claws, springs from the eternal well of Austin influenced psychedelia but succeeds in cross-pollinating punk influences like the Black Lips, Jay Reatard, and Wavves into the genome as well. Jangled keys, winding guitars, and chanted vocals feels like a train on the verge of derailing at any moment, but this quintet of Austin  vagabonds keep the momentum moving forward. Recent additions of keyboardist, Chris Horne, and guitarist, Joe Pechacek, may be the extra layers needed to complete this unique but pleasantly entrancing avant-garde outfit.

Weekend Warrior, October 7 - 9

This Saturday, Philadelphia’s Electric Factory will be hosting the fourth and final installment in Pabst Blue Ribbon’s roving national showcase of musical talent called Project Pabst. This year’s host-cities have been Denver, Portland (Oregon), and Atlanta. Philly’s installment in particular is dubbed the CityWide Fest, sporting a no-nonsense lineup that includes local favorites Hop Along and Beach Slang, along with fellow national touring acts such as Downtown Boys, Animal Collective, Mac DeMarco and Guided by Voices. The event features some aptly branded outdoor attractions housed in tents such as the PBRcade (full gaming arcade), VANdalism (tag up a van that gets donated to charity), and Pabst Wax (mobile music recording, pressing live recordings to vinyl on the spot). The music kicks off at 1pm and runs late into the night, if you’re counting the after-party featuring performances by Son Little and Vulfpeck. Beyond the scope of the day’s events, Pabst runs the PBR Music Society, which is a program for artists that are actively seeking financial support. Participants are asked to produce a video submission, and each month an artist is selected to receive support. For more information on PBR’s efforts and ticket details, you can head HEREElectric Factory, 421 N. 7th St, 1pm, $40 (Full Day)/$19.50 (After-party)/$55 (combo), 21+ - Josh Kelly
