Whoa Dakota performs at LunaSea Holiday bash at East Room on 12.09

Celebrate the holidays early with Whoa Dakota and a whole slate of her fellow LunaSea Media artists on December 9th at The East Room! It's the second anniversary of the Nashville indie record label, and its artists are turning out for a night of music in which they'll cover some Christmas classics as well as each others songs. For example, Whoa Dakota will cover the songs of Tayls, her indie-psych pop tour-de-force label mate; in return, Tayls will perform some of Whoa Dakota's latest NPR-approved tracks. Among the other artists joining them are Kelly Hoppenjans, Molly Rocket, Athena, Pet Envy, and more! Plus, you can enjoy the music while shopping at a holiday market filled with local vendors. Get festive with your favorite local artists! For a taste of what you'll hear, take a listen to Whoa Dakota's "Patterns" from her NPR Tiny Desk Contest submission below. - Will Sisskind

Whoa Dakota Releases EP, "I'm a Liar"

Surrounded by friends, family and fans, Whoa Dakota celebrated the release of her second EP "I'm a Liar" at The Basement Thursday night.

Local acts Rising Sea and Quinn warmed up the full house with some groovy, energetic indie rock, leaving us buzzing as the headliner's patent leather heels took to the stage. On a cloud of contagious rhythms, jazzy bass lines, pop-esque keys and gritty guitar, Whoa Dakota gave a soulful, engaging performance worthy of a standing ovation and a CD purchase.

Whoa Dakota Releases "Banshee" Video

With bold, smoky vocals and a straight-shooting live show, Whoa Dakota is making quite a name for herself in Nashville's flourishing underground scene.

Proving she is just as impressive in the studio, Whoa Dakota has released a new single, "Banshee," and an accompanying music video. Chris Gil and Gavin Shae use rhythmic flashing lights, dramatic close ups and smeared makeup to highlight Whoa Dakota's greatest strength: lyrics that sink their teeth right in to your bones.

Whoa Dakota, "The Sand"

In case you missed Whoa Dakota's unveiling of this video for "The Sand" earlier this month, here it is for your Monday morning. It's a quick number with a slow burn; we dig the gopro action and their gradual creep up to a vengeful crescendo. They may look like kids, but they can sing some mean blues. Stay tuned to this band for an upcoming single as a follow-up to their six-song EP ealier this year, and catch them at The 5 Spot on December 2nd. -Terra James-Jura

Whoa Dakota Release Video for "So Much Trouble"

Whoa Dakota released their first EP March 21st, after several breathy assurances onstage from frontwoman Jessica Ott that is would be "soon" (which, in the music industry, translates to 3 days to a year from time spoken.) Along with it comes this video for "So Much Touble," a slow burner that showcases Ott's crystalline vocals and the jazz influence that drives the band. The EP is nicely gritty, ranging from folk rock ("Get Along") to vengeful, knock-you-down blues ("The Rock That Made Me Mistep,") all laid out with a teasing sense of deliberation. The self-titled debut is available for download here, and keep checking their website for their next Nashville appearance, as they have an commanding live show. -Terra James-Jura
