Wet Leather releases new track "I Was Wrong", plays Elsewhere 02.02

Though they identify their genre of indie music as "anxiety pop", Wet Leather return with confidence as they drop their newest single, "I Was Wrong". Drawing from '80s influences (Prince's ghost often dwells in their recordings) and indie elements of the '00s such as CHVRCHES' synths and poppy hooks, the group once again makes their mark in the NYC scene. Last week, they released another new song called "IWMU"; both that and "I Was Wrong" (streaming below) will appear on Wet Leather's upcoming EP, Present Lives. The group will release the EP and perform on February 2nd at Elsewhere's Zone 1. - Will Sisskind

Wet Leather unveils debut full length 'The Feeling Is Mutual'

By describing their music as "anxiety pop" well before the 2016 elections (may they be damned!), NYC's indie pop quintet Wet Leather might have tapped into something real before we were even aware of it - maybe their music should be the soundtrack of WNYC's new weekly program "United States of Anxiety"? Truth be told, the kind of anxiety channeled by these dudes' tunes is a lot more fun and a lot less stressful thant the one lately delivered by the news (fake ones in particular), so don't be scared of it, actually... embrace it! It's channeled through pure, perfectly crafted and rather classy uptempo pop, with an opening single entitled 'Astral Projection' (streaming) exhibiting traces of Elvis Costello and Camera Obscura, and Prince references coming through in many other tracks (like for example in single 'Shame').

Wet Leather brings their snappy soul pop to Shea Stadium on 02.28

Fans of Prince at its poppiest should check out Wet Leather, a talented NYC band we covered a couple of times already, who specializes in super catchy, very well produced soul-pop nuggets. After releasing "Past Lives "EP" in 2014, the band released two singles in 2015, 'Shame' (streaming) and 'Feel,' from their upcoming album. You can see the quintet live at Shea Stadium tomorrow, January 28th.

We added this song to The Deli's playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists - check it out!

Isabel's CMJ Day 1: Ron Gallo, Wet Leather, Caged Animals, and Weekend Money

My first CMJ day started at Arlene's Grocery with Wet Leather, an NYC based band. The quintet filled the venue with their soulful and memorable alt pop. You can hear an 80’s influence (dominating synth & funky basslines) in their music, but it isn’t gimmicky. Performing alongside, “Yours and Mine,” a track of theirs with anthem potential, Wet Leather also premiered their new track, “Shame,” which had just been premiered on Consequence of Sound. Continuing my night at Cake Shop, Caged Animals were a highlight. The group makes dreamy alt pop so momentous, I forgot I was in the Lower East Side of Manhattan; with introspective lyrics, Vincent Cacchione’s voice, often harmonizing with Magali Francoise, soared over the tightly organized instrumentation. Ending the set with their song, “Teflon Heart,” the track’s catchy melody and vocal hook followed me the rest of the night. To finish the night, I headed back around the corner to Arlene’s Grocery to see local Hip Hop duo (via Philly and Iraq!) Weekend Money perform (pictured). Lead singer Ne$$ was bold in every way, shouting into the crowd, “This ain’t spoken word, wake the fuck up!” Accompanied by Baghdaddy, the two made the audience bounce, but it was Ne$$’s lyrics that were most affecting. Performing their track “Yellow,” he exclaimed to the NYC audience, “Piggy piggy piggies, all I see/Roll around in NYC/And I just try to stay out their way/ We get money in Manhattan take it back to BK.”

Soul poppers Wet Leather release EP "Past Lives" on 12.06 at Rockwood

NYC's Wet Leather plays pop the way we like it: super catchy, but tense and edgy at once. The vague Prince influences we detected in "Astral Projection" - opening track of their soon to be released EP "Past Lives" - become more than vague in following track "Stop Me if I'm Doing it Wrong," but hey, every band has its own references and hardly anybody is channeling "His Royal Badness" these days. Also, not many songwriters can come up with timeless melodies like the one propelling the chorus of "Astral Projection" (streaming). The sophisticated but gritty production enhances the dark side of this pop-soul gem through subtle dissonances and suspencefull staccatos - we dig. Check out Wet Leather at Rockwood's Stage 2 when they celebrate the release of their sophomore EP.
