Club Violaine Show 7.14 with Plush, Pardoner, Young Lovers, and SHEER

San Francisco's PLUSH and pardoner are making rounds on their first tour together through California, and tomorrow they're hitting up Club Violaine's M-Club in Boyle Heights tomorrow, July 14. Enjoy the comforts of Sonic Youth-inspired noise-punk (pardoner), a rarity in Los Angeles, and 50's-reminisicent pop churned through fuzz and reverb aka sob rock (PLUSH).

The night will be supported by rising locals: post-rock group Young Lovers and doomgazers SHEER. If you've been to any of their recent shows you know how expansive these two can get. So you'll probably want to bring earplugs.

First band is on at 9 PM, 21+ venue and five bucks a pop. Get a taste of PLUSH and pardoner below, and gaze responsibly. - Ryan Mo

Doomgazers SHEER plays Club Violaine with Mercury Antennae, Carisa Bianca Mellado

With their first music video just a week away, Simi Valley's SHEER comes out to perform with San Francisco's ethereal wave duo Mercury's Antennae and dark experimental singer Carisa Bianca Mellado at Club Violaine. Resident DJs will also be spinning songs in tribute to Lush along with other classic '90s shoegaze hits till 2 AM.

Since 2001, Club Violaine has kept its hand on the beat of Los Angeles' shoegaze-dreampop scene, hosting local and visiting acts including The Meeting Places, Light FM, Chapterhouse, and more. For seven years, Club Violaine was hosted at Roberto's Club near Chinatown until the establishment closed late 2013. Now it seems Club Violaine has found a new home at the M-BAR Music Lounge in Boyle Heights, easily accessible via Metro. Cover is $5 all night and doors open at 9:30 PM. - Ryan Mo

Instrumental rock band Pretend wants you to be honest with yourself, playing Pehrspace 6.6.15

Pretend are as haunting and majestic as the verdant monoliths of their home in Thousand Oaks. Members Luke Palascak, Timothy Ramirez, Michael Russell, and Joel Morgan have played together since 2005, and in winter of 2007/2008 they spread laid their roots and branched out in every direction, with shades of Slowdive, American Football, Sonic Youth, and Prefab Sprout influencing, but never overtaking their creations.

Melodic counterpoint, cymbal swells, and calculated dynamicism will bring listeners to their knees with reverence, hands outstretched and grasping. Songs are atmospheric and epic, so masterfully produced that fans of Owen, Caspian, and This Town Needs Guns will think it a travesty that Pretend are not more well known. They released the debut LP Bones In The Soil, Rust In The Oil late 2010, and have been quite secretive, but despite their lack of social media presence the group's emotive shows in Westlake, Sherman Oaks, and Ventura have gained a cult following throughout Los Angeles and around the world.

Pretend will be performing the final night of Young Lovers' residency presented with DKFM Radio at Pehrspace with SHEER and Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos) & Eric Gardner (Dot Hacker) — definitely a night you don't want to miss. Their newest album Tapestry'd Life will release October this year. Listen to "Patternless Tide", part of a 2014 compilation from San Diego's Topshelf Records. - Ryan Mo

Nu-gazers SHEER working on debut album

They’re a Korn cover band and they like to thank Riff Raff for everything. But when the cheeky quartet SHEER aren’t making puns and nu metal references or praising the Mad Decent rapper, they’re burying audiences with songs that effortlessly blend dreampop, shoegaze, and doom metal. Formed from a diverse group of musicians in Simi Valley, SHEER released their first pair of singles “Uneasy” and “2014” early this year, gaining buzz on the Internet and in the LA scene by playing at The Smell and White Oak Music and Arts, with veterans like San Fernando experimental group The Unending Thread, Hemet’s resident shoegazing cat lovers Crisis Arm, and Los Angeles punkgazing trio Tennis System. SHEER are putting the finishing touches to their debut album, which is up for release later this year. Check out their 2014 single "Skin," streaming below. - Ryan Mo
