GEOGRAPHER

San Francisco's Geographer brings a smart, sensitive edge to indie electro. Lead singer Mike Deni's soulful voice, soft guitar and cello mix perfectly with drum and synth beats. On new album "Myth" with new label Modern Art Records, the trio displays a more dramatic, fully realized sound that compresses its big, orchestral movements into neat pop songs.

SHANNON & THE CLAMS

Beloved local group Shannon and the Clams (Bethany from Best Coast often sings their praises) placed 2nd with their lo-fi take on the nostaligic '50s girl group sound - which can also evolve towards punk extremes (see video below).

THE FAMILY CREST

The Family Crest is a talented sextet (and up) that plays an intense rootsy pop that borrows the indie rock concept of "loud/quiet/loud" and applies it to an orchestral context, with very convincing results.

EXCUSES FOR SKIPPING

Sounding like a fresh sonic reincarnation of our late-new wave heroes, Excuses for Skipping gives us actually an excuse for traveling back in time, to the days when bands like Cure (poppier period) and early U2 filled our days, and all we thought about was music and... lurve. Thanks for giving us this excuse, Excuses!
