Free Pop-up Concert w/Purling Hiss and Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band at Spruce St. Harbor Park July 24

This evening, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will erect a stage at Spruce Street Harbor Park for a free pop-up concert that will be benefit Vox Populi Gallery and will include video projections and sculptures from some of its artist-members. The show features a duel-headed juggernaut of local psych-rock in Purling Hiss as well as Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel. The trio of Purling Hiss explores and bends the boundaries, placing themselves somewhere that pulls elements from the noise, shoegaze, psych scenarios, while also incorporating delicate melodies with a take it or leave it garage aesthetic and raunchy instrumentation that include monsterous extended guitar jams. It’s a complex sound that when boiled down tastes like what rock 'n' roll is all about. Speaking of going out there, Chris Forsyth and company dare (guitar in hand) to push those concepts. Tearing down artificial walls as part of what becomes a sonic journey organically stretching the fabric of convention with elongated instrumental charges, revealing what lies just beyond the edge. This will be nice warm-up for their set tomorrow night at The Boot & Saddle opening for Oneida. (If necessary, the rain date is scheduled for this Sunday, July 27th at 7:30pm.) Spruce Street Harbor Park, (Spruce St. & Columbus Ave.) 7:30pm, Free, All Ages - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, February 7 - 9

Union Transfer hosts a huge all locals only lineup this Saturday as Pissed Jeans and Purling Hiss join forces for a three-day run with a stop at Union Transfer alongside Trophy Wife, who will joining in for an evening of chaos. Ever since signing to Sub Pop and putting out Hope for Men, Pissed Jeans have found themselves being regarded as one of the best hardcore noise-rock bands of the current generation. And their work with Grammy-nominated Alex Newport on King of Jeans and last year’s Honeys has elevated their sound to a whole new level. What started out as a solo side project by then Birds of Maya guitarist Mike Polizze has evolved into another heavy rockin’ power trio in Purling Hiss. And ever since signing to Drag City and releasing their first record as a trio, Water on Mars, Polizze and friends have gotten bigger than ever. Though Trophy Wife aren’t yet as well-known as their other bill mates, all that could change with the third album that the ladies are shooting to release in late spring, so tonight could be an opportune moment to sample a couple new tunes among the old. It’s your chance to rage this weekend before the snow forces you to hibernate in your home once again. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 8pm, $15, All Ages - Bill McThrill

Purling Hiss Rip & Stitch Rock ‘n’ Roll at KFN Nov. 30

Purling Hiss’ unique downcast psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll will turn your downs up and your ups down, hurling you toward infinity with guitar solos that rip you apart then carefully stitch you back together. Their fourth LP Water On Mars came out earlier this year on Drag City, showing a Purling Hiss that continues to ooze and crack, ricocheting between sludge, shoegaze and sunny guitar rock. They’ll be headlining tonight at Kung Fu Necktie with local pals shimmering garage-pop trio Amanda X and Space Breaker, whose lo-fi fuzz-rock will have you thinking it’s summer 2010. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ - Ali Carter
