12.27: Post Life celebrates new EP release at The Hi Hat

On December 27th, see Post Life have a ball celebrating the release of their brand new EP Nothing/All Is Said, available on the legendary Shrimper Records. They'll take the stage at the Hi Hat on a bill with Yaawn and Lunch Lady, both fellow LA indie acts who will come with the heaviest tunes they have to offer in order to properly close out the year and the decade. For Post Life, the show marks another step in a quest to become one of LA's most intense acts, with a no-frills punk sound that can turn any room into a frenzy. See them do so at the Hi Hat on 12/27. For a preview, take a look at their video for "Brand Damage", a new single, below. - Will Sisskind

Mathrock from the Valley: The Unending Thread to tour and release debut album

If last night's Steven Universe episode has reiterated anything that I already know, it's that people can always appreciate heroes who struggle in the face of adversity. DIY kind of embodies that. We work our hardest to get to a point that could make or break our hobby.

Cesar Alas, Julian Tallman-Rogantini, and Kim Reyes have musicially worked together in different capacities: Rogantini and Alas meshed well in a previous band project, while Kim and Alas both sang in choir class. While Alas made the first move to induct Rogantini and Reyes to The Unending Thread, their present state was defined by the ambition and hard work of all three members. Hailing from the San Fernando Valley, the band's history spans nearly five years, whittled down from an initial lineup of five. Warped Tours have come and gone, but their aim stays true. They still enjoy boba. I'm not sure if they popped their cosplay cherry yet. It could happen.

Big news though: after years of demos, singles, and acoustic covers (thumbs for Sinatra and Fitzgerald), The Unending Thread have finished their first album, <selftitled> the unending thread </selftitled>out on July 25th via Little L Records digitally, and in cassette and CD format. Pre-orders are available now through Bandcamp. To celebrate the album's release, we're premiering the single "Effie", a fast-burner with swirling vocal melodies dripping '90s emo, kaleidoscopic guitars featuring Jeremy Amato (Arid & Amethyst), and push-pull rhythms. Jazzy, poppy, and more than suggestively dance-y, "Effie" shines a light through eclectic influences like The Mars Volta, Haitus Kaiyote, and Chon.

The Unending Thread will be doing a mid-summer tour through California with stops in Nevada and Arizona and ends with Silverlake's DIY Fest. The tour kick-off starts next Monday at the White Oak Music Arts with Post Life, Celebrity Crush, and Coex. - Ryan Mo

Darkwave trio Ghost Noise starts Pehrspace residency in May

The Portuguese have a word that translates to an emotional state of great nostalgia and melancholy: saudade. In Los Angeles, we have a band called Ghost Noise, and we think they work just as well.

The trio draws from wells of sorrowful sentiment to drive their sound, reminiscent of goth-rock, post-punk, and darkwave bands in the 80’s. But beneath the pastiche of lipstick pickups and Korg patches, there’s a greater force at work. The DIY ethic that propels the group has helped them to travel and thrive from Santa Monica to San Luis Obispo. The members are heavily involved in the local music scenes, managing the music/arts collective Mountair and contributing to other homespun organizations on their spare time.

Ghost Noise’s live sets are intimate and decorative: set designs incorporate flowers, lighting, and film backdrops to immerse the audience. They perform throughout California, venturing as far north as Fresno and as far south as Murrieta to house parties and burlesque shows alongside acts like Cruelty Code, Kirilov, and Post Life. Their debut album, THIS IS THE NEXT PART OF YOUR DREAM, was recorded and produced by Josh Solomon (Young Lovers/REVERB LITE) and released on Ritual Tapes in August 2013. Ghost Noise will take up residency at the DIY venue Pehrspace through May, and play across California regions in June. Their follow-up album will be produced by Jessica Nicole Collins (BERU). Listen to their debut single “Amethyst” below. - Ryan Mo
