FRESH CUT: ORNAMENT AND CRIME, "You're A Mess"

Just in time for the unofficial end of summer, Poolside producer Alex Kemp and Grizfolk drummer Bill Delia combine as LA-based duo ORNAMENT AND CRIME, and we’ve got the first single from their debut EP, Another Night on The Astral Plane, the laid-back, semi-tropical groove workout “You’re a Mess,” featuring the vocal talents of Virginia Palms.

“You’re a Mess” tumbles from the speakers in a cascade of effortlessly chill bass and drum work, delicate keyboards that seem to evoke the sway of an accordion player at a bistro on the French Riviera, and even the vaguely mystical vibes of a pan flute. All of it combines into a lush, buoyant track, which is only elevated by the mixed male/female unison vocals that sing above it all. As for the lyrics, Bill Delia explains, “Everyone falls for the wrong person once or twice, right? It’s an enjoyable fail, really. This song honors the toxic lovers we all encounter at some point in our lives, the ones we have a blind eye of love for.”

The new EP by ORNAMENT AND CRIME is scheduled for release on October 15th. If the new single is any indication, we could be looking at a belated end to the summer so that this tune has a proper chance to sizzle out of earbuds and speakers across the city. Gabe Hernandez

FYF 2013: Poolside Live Review

Poolside’s hazy glow was the perfect fit for their 5pm set on Sunday. With their sparkling synths and infectious grooves, the band was practically made for summer. It says a lot about their stellar live show that they drew a very respectable crowd despite having to compete with Chelsea Wolfe and Kurt Vile playing on opposite stages. And for those of us watching, their new wave disco did not disappoint. - Chris Karman

Poolside welcome the Summer with Pacific Standard Time

Certain sounds simply just correspond to a particular season. Especially in July, a month that’s particularly known for conveniently having far too many vibe-y, sun dappled projects. Poolside, a producer/DJ pairing consisting of Fillip Nikolic and Jeffrey Paradise, not only cater to the season, but they’ll knock at your door, remind you to bring your sandals and give you the reassurance the day is going to be legendary...if you go out with them. Of course, not before asking for a generous fund to fill up the cooler with ice, cold beer. “Relax, it’s gonna be alright”, they lazily sing in Slow Down, which appropriately moseys an assortment of synth-draped arrangements while a clean, brittle guitar tempers the mood. But that’s just one of the tracks off Pacific Standard Time, which features close to an hour of salty-yet-sweet repetitious grooves that will give a nice glare to that dank, enclosed office cubicle. - Juan Edgardo Rodríguez (@juanerodriguez)
