Locals Only w/CRUISR, Cold Fronts & Needle Points at The Barbary Jan. 15

When a bunch of turbulent Philly rockers play under one roof, you know you’re in for a wild ride. When those Philly rockers are Needle PointsCold Fronts, and CRUISR, you know you’re in for a wild dance party. Psychedelic outfit Needle Points are sure to get things off to a far-out start, with some guaranteed esoteric visuals, thundering bass lines and tribal drum sequences. Oh, and their bestial get ups are always a treat in and of themselves. Cold Fronts, who finished up a mini U.S tour just before the holidays, are known for their rowdy DIY shows, blasting through their tunes fast and furious to keep kids movin' and sweatin'. CRUISR will finish the night off with their breezy, Cali-vibes indie pop. Their songs demonstrate a real comprehension of what makes the perfect pop hook. And don’t peace out after the show is over! Stick around for the official afterparty, Space Jam, with members of Cold Fronts at the DJ booth. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 7pm, $10, All Ages - Emily DiCicco

Spend Thanksgiving Eve w/Teen Men, Needle Points & Purples at Boot & Saddle Nov. 26

As members of the noteworthy indie-pop group Spinto Band, singer Nick Krill and guitarist Joe Hobson had found a niche for creating catchy, original tunes that made a poetic statement. And the duo has taken that ability and crafted a sensory overload when they joined forces with photographer Catherine Maloney and filmmaker Albert Birney to start their new project Teen Men. The lavish quartet blend artistic alternative music and electronic ambient tones with a photographic and cinematic digital media filmscape to create a one of a kind live experience. Catching them at Boot & Saddle tonight will be the perfect way to spend your Thanksgiving Eve. Especially when they'll be joined by psychedelic journeymen/woman Needle Points, who have also been known to deliver a mind altering live performance that's complete with colorful costumes, dual percussionists, and the thrumming bass of Brian "Langor" Langan. The incendiary musical performance kicks off with a sure to be rockin’ set by Purples, featuring members of Philly indie-rock forefathers The Teeth. Boot & Saddle, 1131 S. Broad St., 8pm, $10, 21+ (Photo by Maciek Jasik) - Bill McThrill

Needle Points 7” Release Show at KFN Oct. 17

Philly psych/garage rock outfit Needle Points promises a real late-night party at Kung Fu Necktie for its record release show in honor of the band's latest 7”, Cripple Street (PaperCup Music), which features two new tracks (“Cripple Street” and “Black Hurricane”). The group’s new material reveals a poppier side of the five-piece, with more of a folk rock influence than on their debut EP, Bom Tugangu. Producing similar kinds of conscious-expanding jams as this evening’s headliner will be local crew The Orange Drop and The Golden Brass (from Brooklyn). It’s a special night for The Orange Drop as well. Lead guitarist Blaze Kozlik has been out as of late with a broken finger; this show will serve as his return to the stage. The Orange Drop, which released its first EP, Drone Pop, in January, is currently working on the group's next. As for tonight’s bill, you can count on some serious good vibes and maybe even some modern-day hippies. Come out, “turn on, tune in, drop out,” and get down! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N Front St, 11pm, 21+, $5 - Emily DiCicco

Mash Bash Philly w/Banned Books, Needle Points, Drone Ranger & Delicate Steve at Underground Arts Oct. 4

Tonight, Bonfire and Brooklyn Brewery present a FREE evening of music featuring a foursome of bands that push sonic boundaries in a fun exciting manner. Noise rock with delightful illuminating pop bursts, providing various evolving textures conjoining odd ends together in a manner that has one’s ears on a high–alert and maintains an accessible path, this is the mode of Banned Books. With a fresh 7” Cripple Street due out via PaperCup Music next week and a full-length album on the way, Needle Points is a band that you want to keep on your radar. The group has a knack for nestling a down-home, bass-thumping groove smack dab in the middle of their unfiltered psych-rock journey, swaying you into submission with thick raunchy guitar riffs that naturally extend the threshold and vocals that etch out a pathway to the space boogie. While your on the intergalactic trail, Drone Ranger weaves in and out of the cosmic with moments of acceleration amid relaxing lower end lulls of relaxing cruise-control jams. Headlining the show with a premium blend of experimental tasty guitar notes and ironed pop sensibility will be Deli NYC favorite Delicate Steve. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, FREE, 21+ - Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, September 26 - 28

Philly’s most successful new pop-up park and beer garden, Spruce Street Harbor Park, closes down for the season on Sunday. But before it does, it’s going out with a trippy psych-rock bang this Saturday evening with an electrifying free concert headlined by Bardo Pond. And since they’re hot off the heels of a European tour, the veteran psych rockers are prepared to have an incendiary homecoming. Tonight will be a good opportunity to catch the retro 60’s street-level boogie of Needle Points before their new album Cripple Street comes out next month. If you caught them during this year’s Kensington Picnic, then you know that Spacin’ delivers a carefree, good-times, all-the-time outdoor performance. And this show will be no exception. Spruce Street Harbor Park, Spruce St. & Columbus Blvd., 7pm, FREE, All Ages - Bill McThrill
