Beach Slang Celebrates "One Year of Being a Band That Plays Shows" at PhilaMOCA July 27

Beach Slang caught us by surprise last year with Who Would Ever Want Anything So Broken? and Cheap Thrills On A Dead End Street, two impressive EPs that found the Philly music scene vets reminding us of old favorites like The Replacements and Social Distortion. The group was eventually snatched up by Polyvinyl Records, and is currently wrapping up a run of Northeast gigs tonight at PhilaMOCA to celebrate its "One Year of Being a Band That Plays Shows." Along for the recent string of shows has been lovable fuzz-pop trio Hurry. And you'll also find powerpop enthusiasts Mike Bell & The Movies and post-punkers Ghost Gum rounding out this stacked evening of local talent. So extend your weekend just one more night! PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 8pm, $14, All Ages - Q.D. Tran

New Music Video: "Know It All" - Mike Bell & The Movies

Here is a new music video from Mike Bell & The Movies for the track "Know It All." The song is off their recent split 7" with Lizard Police, entitled Philadelphia/Tulsa (Major Bear Records/Messy Life Records/Songs From the Road Records), and features Mimi Gallagher (of NONA) on vocals. The video was directed by Craig Scheihing, and stars band member Peter Helmis' best friend, Mr. Wendal. "On a cool winter day in March three videographers led by esteemed adventure, Mr. Wendal embarked on an excursion to find the answer to life, the universe, and everything. What they discovered may shock you... the following video is not for the faint of heart." (Photo by Scott Troyan)

New Track: "Know It All" - Mike Bell & The Movies

Featured on Mike Bell & The Movies upcoming split 7” with Lizard Police due out March 31, via Major Bear/Messy Life/Songs from the Road, “Know It All” is a straight-ahead rocker with a fun pop touch. Utilizing vocals from ex-NONA's Mimi Gallagher to create a male-female interplay, corresponding to the song’s breakup dynamic, while also enlisting the services of bandmate and The Weaks' Evan Bernard and Chris Diehm (1994!, Quit). “Know It All” takes frustration, and flips the script .

The Deli Philly’s New Year’s Eve Show Roundup

There is too much great local music happening tonight that you can’t possibly cover and see it all. Here’s a roundup of some shows that you should be at to ring in the New Year this evening. A hot one will be newly signed to Saddle Creek, Hop Along, at Johnny Brenda’s for a sold-out show with Thin Lips and roses. The group recently wrapped up its stint in the studio where they’ve been working on their next label album with producer John Agnello (Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr., etc.) so there should be plenty of new material. Philly indie-rock mainstays Man Man, opening for Gogol Bordello at the E Factory, should be a fantastic show. Our friends at PhilaMOCA will be hosting Mannequin Pussy and the Jawbreaker reunion. A Sunny Day in Glasgow are capping off their holiday run at Boot & Saddle. Shaky Jake and his Killer Bangs crew are taking over Kung Fu Necktie with psych outfit Drone Ranger and stoner metalheads Ruby the Hatchet. And take some swings at batting cages/DIY music space Everybody Hits with The Spirit of the Beehive and Mike Bell & The Movies. And the list goes on and on… Share how you’re spending your NYE?

New Track: "American Christmas, Idiot" - Mike Bell & the Movies

With Christmas on the horizon, it's good to see artists donating their talents to raise money for good causes. Mike Bell & the Movies recently shared a pop-punk tune called "American Christmas, Idiot," and will donate proceeds from its sales to Rock to the Future, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that provides free music education for under served Philadelphia youth. They'll also be ringing in the New Year at DIY concert space/batting cages Everybody Hits alongside The Spirit and the Beehive.
