New Laser Background EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Co-produced by Michael Johnson (Ape School), Andy Molholt, a.k.a. Laser Background, has released a new EP, titled People Person, which is available on cassette via Endless Daze. Playfully twisted, there’s an airiness, steeped in liquid-pop magic. Those vibrant tones provide an accessible platform, as the mind mixes and meanders through thought. Supported by Sixteen Jackies and Cigarette, you can join them this evening for People Person's album release celebration at Jerry's On Front.

Weekend Warrior, March 2 - 4

Since last September, Andy Moholt has been playing guitar with Speedy Ortiz, and he has also released not one but two collaborative LPs with Ava Luna’s Julian Fader, under the moniker Coffee. And before he heads out to SXSW and a tour in May/June with Speedy Ortiz, Molholt will be squeezing in a live performance of his Laser Background catalogue at Space 1026 this Saturday evening. With a new EP in the works, you may get to hear some recently fleshed out pieces of what he’s been up to in the lab with Carlos Hernandez (Ava Luna) and bandmate Michael Chadwick. On the bill, you’ll also find the melodic contemplations of Dweller, medieval folk-pop of Sandcastle, and indie-popsters Rabbits to Riches. So get there early, go grab a tasty bite in Chinatown, and come hang at the rad Center City DIY art space! – H.M. Kauffman

Weekend Warrior, September 15 - 17

This Saturday, the historic Electric Factory will be hosting Project Pabst Citywide Fest, where you’ll be treated to an array notable and rising indie recording artists. The fiercely open, riff-tastic tunes of Thin Lips will be catching hold of early birds with momentous melodies. Later in the day, bridging the gap between adolescent and adulthood into anthems of universal release, The Menzingers take the stage to the delight of their growing loyal fan base. Sandwiched in between, you’ll also find the fragile, cathartic, biting melodies of Nothing and the sincere, gritty, pop sensibilities of Speedy Ortiz, who has recently welcomed Laser Background’s Andy Moholt into the fold. The elegantly exposed vulnerability of Big Thief, Atlanta garage-rock gals The Coathangers, and “Mr. F*ck, That’s Delicious” Action Bronson round out this daylong hang. – Michael Colavita

Dark Nuclear Bogs officially drops on April 28, and will be available via Mutual Crush/Endless Daze, but you can now stream it over at Stereogum. The band will also begin its extensive tour of the U.S. and Canada this evening, which will be making a stop home this Saturday, April 29 at Baird Mansion Atrium for the group's album release celebration with Norwegian Arms and Breathers.

New Music Video: "Bright Field" - Laser Background

Directed by Craig Scheihing, the new music video for "Bright Field," the closing track on Laser Background’s forthcoming album Dark Nuclear Bogs (due out on April 28), captures threads of childhood innocence with a looking-glass warp. While filtering the memories associated with one’s backyard through a sea of flowers, the video meshes the past with the present. You can catch Laser Background’s record release show, happening on Saturday, April 29 at Baird Mansion Atrium with Norwegian Arms, Breathers, and YCIB.
