Jelani Sei plays prog-R&B at Trans-Pecos 12.23

The last few years have seen a rise in experimental, genre-bending, independently produced music. Perhaps this is due to the internet’s ability to access almost any music instantly, or maybe the breadth of music already created pushes artists towards a disregard for barriers of style. The disappearance of label-driven artist development might be part of it too. Whatever the cause, the NYC scene is producing a lot of incredibly innovative music — and Jelani Sei is part of this phenomenon. The Connecticut/New York group plays soulful, hip-hop and jazz inspired music with a flair for indie and alt rock traditions. Without abandoning the approachable framework of pop music, Jelani Sei has created a complex and intelligent sound. You can hear the group’s idiosyncratic style opening for T-Rextasy on December 23rd at Trans-Pecos. – Cameron Carr

Buzz Alert: Jelani Sei Unleashes Ethereal Funk in New EP, Kaaria

Transcendental indie-funk band Jelani Sei has released a genre-bending second EP in Kaaria, a study in ethereal soundscapes mixed with soulful vocals and nasty funk grooves.  The vocal work is exemplary, with complimenting performances from Kayana Guity and Evan Lawrence that work seemlessly together to create a unified voice.  Catchy hooks, inventive songwriting, and tight instrumentals make Kaaria a release that is not to be missed. -Brian Varneke

Vagabon brings her ethereal alt folk to Baby's All Right 2/24

Brooklyn-based Vagabon's vocals are sometimes wistful, sometimes haunting, but always seem to have a soft ethereal quality to them. An indie rock project spearheaded by Laetita Tamko, Vagabon navigates the spaces between dulcet tones and crunchy feedback effortlessly. While every track on her Persian Garden EP is worth spending time with, "Cold Apartment Floors" is a distinct stand-out--featuring the juxtaposition of thick, noisy guitars, against Tamko's soft vocals; resonating like thunder and rain. You can check her out at Baby's All Right with Mal Devisa and Jelani Sei 2/24, and in the meantime, be sure to stream her music below. - Olivia Sisinni
