New Video: "Crowded Stranger" (Live - Feat. Ashley Arnwine) - Girlpool

Check out Girlpool performing for the first time with a drummer live! Their guest, Ashley Arnwine (PINKWASH, ex-Bleeding Rainbow), is definitely no stranger to the Philly music scene lately. They performed "Crowded Stranger," off the band's latest release Before The World Was Big, at The Beat Kitchen on May 8 in Chicago. (Video by Dan Resner)

New Track: "Before The World Was Big" - Girlpool

LA transplants Girlpool just released the title track to their forthcoming Wichita Recordings LP Before The World Was Big, due out June 2. With tongue-twisting interlaced vocals recalling nostalgic lyrics compounded by their strolling bass-guitar lines, the song becomes almost immediately familiar. The duo will take part in a Record Store Day performance at Repo Records this Saturday on a bill that also includes Sad Actor, Cheerbleeders, Easy Creatures, Gondola, Tough Shits, and Witch Fist. Girlpool will be heading out on tour with labelmate Waxahatchee later this month. (Photo by Alice Baxley)

The Deli LA's Best Emerging Artists of 2014: 1. Dorothy, 2. Girlpool, 3. Fever The Ghost

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging LA Artists was - as usual - a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it off with remarkable flair!

Congrats to Alt Rock four piece Dorothy, who won our overall poll and we therefore crown as "The Deli LA's Best Emerging Band of the Year. "

With their jubilant choruses and foot-stomping riffs, Dorothy brings an exciting modern twist to their classic rock influences. Singer... Dorothy is a tour de force: her powerful vocals and commanding presence instantly bring audiences to their feet. In the past year they’ve been regularly selling out shows in local venues and large theaters alike, a good indication that their musical journey is just getting started. Check out their break out single "Wicked Ones."

Kudos also to indie folk duo Girlpool (who, sadly for us, recently left the best coast for Philly), and to quirky electro-psych-poppers Fever the Ghost, who also placed third in last year's Best of LA poll! That must mean something - we are digging their new record as we speak.

Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ LA scene expert (our jury, listed at the bottom) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for all genres, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music LA produced in the year 2014, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Girlpool Opening for Alex G at PhilaMOCA Feb. 3

So, the good news first - a trio of excellent bands are performing tonight in the intimately close quarters of PhilaMOCA. The recently transplanted LA-native pairing of Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad, better known as Girlpool, excel at creating music whose stripped-down guitar and bass instrumentation musters significant substance with a catchy twist. The sincere emotional expression through their songs conjures a real, resonating power. Tightly weaving vocals demonstrate a united front, which whether it aches or smiles in the first-hand storytelling of their lyrics, leaves a listener feeling that he/she were witness to (or given access to) private personal moments and thoughts. Former The Deli Philly’s Year End Readers’/Fans’ Poll Winner, Alex G headlines this evening bringing an infectiously intimate dose of melodic lo-fi that seeps into your conscience, while the noise friendly pop-punk marriage of Maryland’s on-again, off-again band Teen Suicide is sandwiched in the middle. However, the bad news is that this show is sold out so hopefully you already have your ticket in hand. New Music Video: "Chinatown" - Girlpool

Pop-punk duo Girlpool reveals a bit of a sensitive side for its former home, Los Angeles, in the group's latest music video, "Chinatown." The track is off the band's upcoming 7", which will be available on March 24 via Wichita Recordings. You'll find Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad performing next in Philly at PhilaMOCA on Tuesday, February 3 at the sold-out R5 show with Alex G and Teen Suicide. (Photo by Alice Baxley)
