Field Mouse's new full-length album, Meaning, is out today via Topshelf Records. The band's latest collection of recordings navigates and negotiates individual existence, within a world of disorder. Peaceful vocals provide the vehicle to explore personal and societal problems and pleasures in radiant, melodic eruptions. The LP was produced by Field Mouse bandmates, Andrew Futral and Rachel Browne, and Kyle Gilbride (of Wherever Audio). 

New York / Philadelphia band Field Mouse evoke internal conflict on their new single “Heart of Gold,” basking in lukewarm nostalgia against massive pop punk riffs and a breakneck percussive pace. With lyrics detailing dreams of car crashes and meeting one’s “evil self,” lead singer Rachel Browne’s vocal performance is rife with anxiety and a lingering sense of dread. Despite this apprehension, Browne still expresses a cautious confidence, stating she “still has a heart of gold,” which offset against melodic, explosive guitar work embeds the track with an enduring sense of optimism. Philly and NYC-based Field Mouse have been known for their dreamy, shoegazey tunes, but while their hook filled songwriting is still on full display on their latest album, "Episodic," the five-piece's sound has evolved in a punchier direction, which is a bit more barefaced, and less shrouded by layers of fuzz and reverb. Q&A with Field Mouse about pedals and the creative process.

While the quintet of Field Mouse splits time between Philly and New York, the band celebrates their new album Episodic, officially being released tomorrow via Topshelf Records, with a show this evening at Boot & Saddle. The collection of songs carries a composed yet volatile potential to shift as personal sketches of well-oiled, melodic pop-rock are momentarily provided. Rachel Browne exhibits a smooth, steady vocal tone that flexes when emotively pushed. It’s simultaneously tender and tumultuous. Cynthia Ann Schemmer's (Radiator Hospital) musical vehicle, Swanning, occupies the middle slot of this lineup - decidedly open lyrically whilst incorporating rougher edges to the overall sense of polish.
