We've sung the praises of NYC indie rockers Captain Baby quite often here at The Deli - check out this spread feature about them on the recent winter issue of our print magazine, or the various bits of coverage they had on this very blog. This is a band that has forged its own sound, and their new single 'Rainbow Reach,' whose video we are premiering below, is a confirmation of it. The song belongs to a forming collection of new tracks that will constitute the band's follow up to the excellent 2014 debut LP 'Sugar Ox.' 

The dimly-lit Arlene's Grocery may have been rather empty yesterday afternoon (tough to fill up a NYC venue on an early Tuesday pm!) but it held several intriguing, strangely beautiful acts, booked by NYC promoters Siren Sounds. First up was the Brooklyn six-piece Captain Baby whose heavy guitars and warbled vocals conjured a darkly electric atmosphere, like something out of Gotham City. The Asher Rogers-led band also displayed a warmer side, though, their drum-pulsed last track (presumably from their debut album 'Sugar Ox') being catchy and even sexy. Next to take the disco ball-fronted stage were fellow Brooklyners Rosy Street. Down to frontman Kyle Avallone's skinny black jeans and deep vocal rasp, the rock quartet was something out of filmmaker Jim Jarmusch's universe, its ominous yet serene tracks of thin guitars and tumbling drums creating a spectral warmth. Afterwards came Henry Hall, a beguiling singer-songwriter whose hometown on his Facebook page amusingly states: "JFK//LAX." Along with his bassist Robby Caplan and drummer (apparently Nate Mondschein), Hall broke into the guitar-fuzzed songs (off his eponymous EP released earlier this year) that intriguingly sunk mellow R&B in hard rock, his virtuosic voice at times recalling Jack Black and at others Destiny's Child and always commanding the room. Philadelphia-based rock trio Ron Gallo closed the afternoon with classic rock force, its thunderous guitar cuts (off a forthcoming album) fondly recalling Led Zeppelin and Cream while proving, as many of the songs from the previous groups did, that thrilling, committed music can occur at all hours of the day. - Zach Weg

Music revivals can be great, don't get us wrong. But a blog dedicated to a scene with a history as eclectic and forward thinking as the NYC one should not miss any opportunities to highlight artists that are making an effort to sound different (without sounding awful, because it's too easy that way!). Brooklyn based Captain Baby makes such effort, and pulls it off brilliantly. We noticed their music about a year ago, cherry picking it from the jungle of our digital submissions. Listening to their debut album "Sugar Ox" one year later, we realize it's a true gem. Led by Afghani composer Asher Rogers, this is a project that finds inspiration in genre mashup, with an overall "avant-indie" sound that swallows and processes music as distant as reggae, African rhythms, funk, Eastern music and Calypso among others. They have three videos out, all obviously low budget, but very cool nonetheless. Check out below the one for "I Say You" and their strangely soulful latest single "More than a Woman." Captain Baby will be performing at Arlene's Grocery on 10.13 (early show) within the CMJ Music Marathon.

After Septebmer it becomes increasingly difficult for us to check the music that's sent to us for coverage consideration, but this weekend we found the energy to go through a bunch of them, here's a bands we feel deserve to be highlighted.

NYC quartet Captain Baby offers forward looking pop/rock, ta times reminiscent of that incredible NYC band that was Soul Coughing ("I Say You" - streaming), at others the more progressive David Bowie albums ("Be Ashamed"). Their full length "Sugar Ox" is a raw cross genre exploration and features a lot of interesting ideas and sonics.
