Bands in the studio: Azar Swan

Led by charismatic songwriter Zohra Atash and produced religiously through DIY means by Joshua Strawn, Electro Goth duo Azar Swan recently unveiled this new video for single 'Over' (below), and is gearing up for a September West Coast tour. We asked them a few questions about their favorite gear and recording habits here.

Weekly Features: Azar Swan

Emerging from the ashes of previous incarnation Religious to Damn, ZorahAtash and Joshua Strawn have spent the last year creating a compelling new sound and image as Azar Swan. Their recently released full length album “Dance Before the War,” available from Handmade Birds Records, presents a technically modern sound that at times pays homage to the 90’s goth rock canon. The band recently toured the West Coast with NYC witch rock project Delphic Oracle and opened for Suuns at a memorable Death by Audio show on February 21.

Azar Swan releases debut album 'Dance Before the War'

Like some kind of darker and electro version of Kate Bush, Brooklyn duo Azar Swan explores uncharted territories without ever relinquishing melody. A wide scope of influences - ranging from industrial percussions to oriental atmospheres - pervades the band's debut album "Dance Before the War," out now on Handmade Birds Records. Check out opening track 'Lusty' Below, or stream the entire record on Soundcloud.

Azar Swan releases new single

Elements of Kate Bush at her most adventurous emerge in the vocal stylings of Zorah Atash as she sings with her band Azar Swan on the hypnotic new single 'In My Mouth.' Its rhythmic pulse pushes forward with a teutonic minimalism that somehow manages to also swing in the process, positioning this track next to the output of Swedish electronic duo The Knife. The subject matter and overall sexual overtones is as primal as it gets, and the relatively new genre classification called "Witch House" may be as good a place as any for this emerging sound. The track has been released as a digital 7” on Pendu Sound Recordings and is well worth adding to your goth-dance playlist. - Dave Cromwell

Azar Swan announces single on Pendu

“Lusty,” the first single by NYC’s Azar Swan (# 56 in our Best of 2012 Poll for Emerging NYC Artists, previously known as Religious to Damn), defies easy categorization. A toxic blend of jungle rhythm and technopunk aggression provide the sweltering backdrop for singer Zohra Atash’s ominous gothic vocal style. What makes “Lusty” (streaming below) so visceral, however, is the way its beastial lyrics burn with a kind of sexual frustration that feels both dangerous and pornographic. Beware Azar Swan, and look out for a new single coming soon on Pendu Sound . - Brian Chidester
